Enactus from Delhi University’s Jesus and Mary College has successfully contributed to the construction of a sustainable public toilet inside the Kamla Market Police Station complex at Ajmeri Gate in an admirable effort to address the problems of plastic waste and poor sanitation. The creative initiative, known as Project Sugam, seeks to advance environmental awareness while tackling critical sanitation issues in the region.
The recently opened public toilet is proof of the effectiveness of eco-friendly materials and neighbourhood-based programmes. Enactus cell president Kavya Gupta expressed her joy at the project’s completion and highlighted the significance of personal accountability when it comes to waste management. “Your waste is your own,” she said. Nobody else ought to have to take it.
It took a long time to develop this environmentally friendly facility. The Enactus cell’s general secretary, Sania Gupta, explained that the project had been in the works since 2019, with actual construction starting in May. The COVID-19 pandemic caused delays and several difficulties for the team, among others. Their perseverance won out despite these obstacles.
The location of the public lavatory required careful consideration. The Special Education Magistrate (SEM) Court, Ramleela Ground, GB Road, and the New Delhi Railway Station are all accessible from the region, which is why Kiran Sethi, a sub-inspector at Kamla Market Police Station, emphasised the urgent need for clean restrooms in the area. Sethi expressed the expectation that the environmentally friendly toilet would encourage people to adopt eco-friendly practices in addition to offering a sanitary facility for sanitation.
Through a crowdfunding campaign, the Enactus cell was able to raise a budget of 2.5 lakh rupees for
the project. Their dedication to using ecologically friendly methods to address modern concerns is
seen from the public restroom’s design and amenities. Earthen pots (matkas) are used to make the
roof, which naturally controls the building’s temperature and keeps it cool. When someone enters,
motion sensors turn on the lights automatically, saving electricity.
The project’s usage of eco-bricks produced from single-use plastic bottles is among its most
noticeable features. A Noida-based NGO called Jaago Bharat graciously supplied half of these eco-
bricks. In addition, a number of firms donated their free services, helping to fund the installation of
hardware, colorful paintings, and a facility map.
The environmentally friendly public toilet built by the Enactus cell inside the Kamla Market Police
Station complex is a great illustration of what can be accomplished with the help of neighborhood-
driven projects and sustainable practices. The public who uses this facility gains knowledge about
the possibility of environmentally friendly solutions in addition to receiving the benefits of a clean
and hygienic toilet. The project serves as evidence of the beneficial contribution committed people
and groups can make to their communities when they join together with a common vision of a
cleaner, greener future.
