The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), two well-known student organisations, have gone above and above to make space for female students by releasing separate manifestos as the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) election campaigns heat up. This ground-breaking action strives to address the particular worries and goals of female students at the university.
The ABVP, which won three out of four seats in the most recent election in 2019, unveiled their entire 21-point manifesto and the appropriately named “WoManifesto” during a press conference on Monday. The NSUI unveiled “Her Manifesto,” a brilliantly named manifesto for women supported by the Congress party. These manifestos show an intentional effort on the part of Delhi University to engage and empower female students.
ABVP’s “WoManifesto”
ABVP’s manifesto focuses on a wide range of issues, including:
- “One Course, One Fee”: A policy aimed at simplifying the fee structure.
- University Special Buses: Enhancing transportation services within the campus.
- Increment in Scholarships: Ensuring increased opportunities for SC/ST/OBC students.
- Metro Concession Passes: Addressing the commuting needs of students.
- Prioritizing Student Mental Health: Establishing dedicated centres for mental health support.
Notably, ABVP’s “WoManifesto” also advocates for:
- Scholarships for Transgender Students: Recognizing and supporting the needs of transgender students.
- New Hostels for Girls: Expanding accommodation options for female students.
- “Mission Sahasi”: Offering self-defence training for women.
- “Ritumani Abhiyan”: Distributing sanitary napkins to promote menstrual hygiene.
The ABVP’s candidate for secretary, Aparajita, emphasised the importance of women’s empowerment to the party. They emphasised programmes like the renovation and replacement of sanitary pad vending machines and incinerators in all colleges, the appointment of gynecologists’ and psychologists on a full-time basis at the Women’s Union Society (WUS) health centre at DU, the strengthening of Internal Complaints Committees (ICCs) in colleges, and the installation of CCTV cameras both inside and outside of college grounds.
NSUI’s “Her Manifesto”
The NSUI’s manifesto for women, “Her Manifesto,” encompasses the following key points:
- Menstrual Leaves: Providing up to 12 days of menstrual leave per semester.
- Legal Assistance: Offering support in cases of harassment, moral policing, cyber bullying, and administrative issues.
- Emergency Response System: Implementing a distress call system for urgent situations.
- Enhanced Safety and Security: Increasing the number of female guards.
In addition, NSUI promises to create a “functional ICC,” hold consistent gender sensitization sessions, and run self-defence training courses. In addition, “Her Manifesto” pledges to improve infrastructure for women, including restrooms that are clean, locker rooms for athletes, useful medical facilities, and counselling services in institutions.
The publication of these manifestos for women shows Delhi University’s commitment to tackling gender-specific issues and fostering an environment that is more welcoming and encouraging for female students. With only three days remaining to campaign, it is still unclear how these commitments will be received by the student population and affects the impending DUSU elections.
