The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), supported by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has once again won the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections with a resounding victory. With the results announced on Saturday night, the ABVP was able to secure three of the four crucial positions, retaining its hold over the student body.
The newly elected office- members are as follows:
- Tushar Dedha – President (ABVP)
- Aparajita – Secretary (ABVP)
- Sachin Baisla – Joint Secretary (ABVP)
- Abhi Dahiya – Vice-President (NSUI)
On the North and South campuses, 52 colleges and departments participated in the voting process for these four key DUSU seats. This election was a significant occasion since it took place after a three-year break because of the pandemic-induced lockdown.
Joyous celebrations broke out at Delhi University’s Arts faculty when the results of the vote-counting were announced, and the winners took pride in standing atop the Vivekananda monument.
With this triumph, the ABVP has now won three of the four important positions three times in a row. Akshit Dahiya led the prior two instances in 2019–20 and Akiv Baisoya led them in 2018–19. The main focus of the competition, like in previous years, was a head-to-head matchup between ABVP and NSUI.
The ABVP and NSUI have constantly competed for control of the DUSU over the course of the last five elections. The ABVP won the presidential election in 2016, 2018, and 2019, although NSUI maintained the position for a full year in 2017.
In the most recent election, Tushar Dedha of the ABVP won by an amazing margin of 3,115 votes over Hitesh Gulia of the NSUI to win the president. Aparajita and Baisla triumphed over NSUI contenders Yakshna Sharma and Shubham Kumar by margins of 12,937 and 9,995, respectively, to win the posts of secretary and joint secretary. In the contest for vice president, Abhi Dahiya of NSUI won with 22,331 votes, defeating Sushant Dhankar of ABVP by a margin of 1,829 votes.
Tushar Dedha said of the victory: “The ABVP’s commitment to issue-based campaigning resonated with the varied student body of Delhi University. The wide margins of our victories reflect the strong faith and confidence that students have in ABVP’s capacity to look out for their best interests.
Furthermore, ABVP highlighted the historic nature of Aparajita’s victory as the woman candidate with the highest margin of votes, emphasizing the party’s consistent work on women’s issues and empowerment. In a statement, they reaffirmed their commitment to serving the entire student community of Delhi University.
The election results confirm the ABVP’s sustained dominance inside the Delhi University Students’ Union, with the party receiving strong support from the student body for its dedication to issue-based campaigning and student welfare.
